Active life in four steps
Thomas Kieller
All inactive persons who start for the first time a training program or a new activity and who want to practice it regularly should pass through four steps.
1. The resolution
2. The initiation
3. The trial
4. The success
The resolution (Before starting the activity)
At this step, you (the sedentary person) reconsider your lifestyle. You note that certain of your needs incite you to adopt an active life, but you hesitate to change your routine. Incorporating sessions of physical activities to the daily life creates resistance to the change. You must surpass this resistance.
You weigh the pros and cons of active life and you motivate yourself by saying "I will move". At a certain moment a click occurs which marks the point when you decide to start to be active regularly. This resolution is the difficult part of this step.
Afterwards, you must choose an activity which corresponds to your taste and goals. The choice must satisfy your needs.
In this step, one must say "I will move" and at the same time choose well one's activity.
The initiation (From the start to the second month)
After choosing an activity according to your personal criteria, the next step is to start the activity. You (the new sportsman or sportswoman) will feel an initial stress because you are in a new environment and also the change disturbs your lifestyle. In spite of this little snag, if the activity is correctly chosen, the danger to stop will dissipate since you will feel a real infatuation to practice it. Indeed, the notion of newness will bring pleasure.
However, if the activity does not correspond to your tastes and criteria or if the ambiance is disagreeable, you will cease rapidly to practice it. The great majority of failures are due to a bad choice of an activity and not to your behavior.
The applicable rule at this step is to have pleasure during the new activity.
The trial (From the third month to the seventh month)
At this step, you start to get acquainted with your activity and your entourage. The first difficulties will show up. For example, you may have to leave for a trip, you change work or your studies are getting tougher. These are situations which unsettle your active lifestyle. You must not fall into laziness. It's preferable to adopt a positive and energic attitude. It's normal to miss activity sessions, but in the long term, you must practice regularly your sport. Despite the shackles, you must persist.
Moreover, it's possible at this step that you feel fatigued. You must recognize the signs that your body sends you in order to determine the good frequency of your sessions. If you feel fatigued, you must take the time to recuperate.
The rule to follow is to be regular in the practice of your activity while taking time to recuperate well during the off period.
The success (Eight months and more)
At this step, you are familiar with your entourage and your activity. The sessions of physical activities are an integral part of your lifestyle. You are definitely on the good track. It suffices to continue practicing your activity. Take the time to encourage others to move.
At this point, you can also try new activities. The practice of new sports will workout the different qualities of the body.
The rule to follow is to continue to move.
