Reasons to be active
Thomas Kieller
It's important to know the reasons which push us to live actively, because in this manner we can choose appropriately the sport which will fulfil our needs. As you can understand, there exist many reasons that incite us to practice a physical activity or a sport.
The principal reasons are related to six concepts:
- health,
- physical form,
- pleasure and well-being,
- camaraderie,
- competition,
- stress.
To be healthy
Health is a reason which motivates a good number of persons to be active. Many people have understood that physical activity is a determining element for health, as well as nutrition, sleep, good life habits and stress management.
Health concerns push people to work-out the different parts of their body. Some people run, swim or bicycle to lose excess weight; other persons train their heart to diminish the risk of heart problems. Health objectives do not lack and vary a great deal from person to person.
To be in form
The form is also a major reason that push adults, twenty to thirty-five years old, to move. This pursuit of the physical form touches the notion of a sportive performance.
Indeed, amateur sportsmen and sportswomen, and high caliber athletes implicated in competitive leagues want to improve the different physical qualities of their body, such as cardiorespiratory system, muscular strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, and body composition. By practicing physical activities and by doing appropriate exercises, they can also improve speed, power, agility, neuromuscular coordination, balance, and reaction time, which will influence, necessarily, their game quality. By training rigorously, they become better players.
On another topic, some people do physical activity to be in form for their profession. For example, firemen. They improve their physical form because it facilitates the realisation of their work.
For the pleasure and well-being
Some people turn towards an active life to have pleasant sensations and to feel good.
Indeed, active life procures pleasure to sportsmen and sportswomen. Moving provocates a reaction of the body which secrets different types of hormones giving a pleasant sensation to sportsmen and sportswomen.
For example, the runner has euphoric sensations when he or she covers a long distance. Another person will prefer football or rugby because of the physical contacts which ensue in these sports. Other sportsmen and sportswomen choose hockey for the exhilaration that speed procures. The climber, the cyclist and the swimmer are delighted with exquisite pleasures that they obtain from the typical characteristics of their sport. Therefore, we must choose an activity which corresponds to our taste, because the pleasure will only be more delectable.
On the other hand, some people do sports to have a sentiment of well-being. When they implicate themselves in a sport, it allows them to reinforce their self-esteem.
For camaraderie
Another reason that pushes people to be active is camaraderie. Sport allows to create friendships between participants. By being a part of a team, a group or a club, sportsmen and sportswomen can exchange social ideas while doing their sport. Eventually, comradeship will form inside the group.
For competition
Many sportsmen and sportswomen do competitive sports, because they have an insatiable urge to surpass themselves physically and mentally while practicing their favorite activity. By measuring themselves to other experienced competitors, the sportsmen and the sportswomen can develop values and abilities.
Of course, we have to choose an appropriate category within our capacities. A too high level can be an insurmountable test and can at the same time remove the pleasure of the activity.
To evacuate stress
Many people practice a physical activity to evacuate the stress of life. Indeed, sports allow to establish a good balance between work, family and health.
By practicing their favorite activities, some persons can recuperate lost energy or at least escape, momentarily, from their worries. In short, sport responds well to the need of eliminating stress.
Conclusion
We understand that there are many reasons which can push someone to move and that generally all are justified. Keep in mind that the reasons which push you to be active are in close relation with your needs and your tastes. These elements will help you choose well the activity that will fit you the best.
